2005 Christmas Wine > SOLD OUT |
|

 |
The release
of this year's Christmas Wine is significant for all of us at Smoky
Hill Vineyards. It marks the first new wine release since the
death of our founder and winemaker, Steve Jennings. It is
significant because just as December marks the end of a calendar
year, the beginning of the Christmas season marks the beginning of
the church year. The close of the 2005 calendar year marks the
cessation of vintages created hands-on by our founder, but dawns the
transition for his wines to be carried on by the team standing
firmly in place to carry on his dream: to produce the finest wine in
Kansas.

Steve's
son, Norm, assisted by Director of Cellar Operations,
Brett Sula,
crafted this year's Christmas wine following the path that Steve
laid.
In late
October and early November, key members of the Smoky Hill staff and
family representing over 40 years of Winery experience, gathered to
"team taste" samples of Christmas wine prepared by Norm and Brett.
Comparing blends to last year's vintage in a blind tasting, the
selection was unanimous.

Slightly sweeter than last year's
vintage, due to part to the intense heat the vineyard
flourished in this past summer, the entire staff is confidant of the
legacy the 2005 Vintage Christmas Wine affirms. A careful blend of
vidal, ventura, vignoles and chardonnay grapes have resulted
in a light bodied wine, reminiscent of green apple, apricot and
nutmeg with a semi-sweet finish. A select group of spices,
which have been placed in a mesh bag, is suspended in the wine for
just the right length of time to pick up the flavors from the
spices. The spices are quite prominent during the holiday season,
then mellow out over the next several months to produce a lightly
spiced, semi-sweet table wine appropriate for many special
occasions. This wine is delicious chilled, and just as good mulled.

The bottle is also of special
significance this year. The third in a series, an etched silhouette
bottle features a country church, its steeple reaching for the
brilliance of a bright star, the snow covered field blanketing
the dormant ground of a cold, Christmas night. This year's
Christmas wine celebrates the legacy of our winemaker, and is
dedicated to honor his life.
